Honouring Logan’s Legacy: Bernadine and Toby Boulet Receive Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Lethbridge
The 2025 Fall Convocation at the University of Lethbridge was filled with milestones, emotion, and hope. Among the more than 300 graduates who crossed the stage, two remarkable individuals were recognized for their extraordinary impact on Canada and beyond — Bernadine and Toby Boulet, the parents of Logan Boulet and the inspiration behind Green Shirt Day.
In a heartfelt ceremony held on October 18, Bernadine (BEd ’88) and Toby (BEd ’89, MEd ’94) each received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree — marking the first time the university has presented the honour to a married couple during the same ceremony. The recognition celebrates their tireless advocacy for organ donation and their role in inspiring a movement that continues to save lives every day.
The Boulets’ journey of advocacy began after the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash on April 6, 2018, which claimed the lives of 16 people, including their son, Logan Boulet. Logan, who had recently registered to become an organ donor, gave the gift of life to six people. His selfless act inspired millions across Canada to follow his example, sparking what became known as The Logan Boulet Effect and leading to the creation of Green Shirt Day — a national initiative promoting organ donor awareness and registration.
“You don’t have to be the brightest light — you just need to share your light. The world needs your kindness, empathy, and hope.”
— Dr. Bernadine Boulet
During their joint convocation address, Bernadine and Toby spoke about resilience, gratitude, and the light that can emerge from even the darkest moments.
“After our son Logan passed on April 7, we felt as if a light in our lives had been extinguished,” shared Toby. “But in time, we rediscovered that same light — the sunlight that Logan loved so much. It filled our home again with warmth and comfort.”
They encouraged the graduating class to carry that light forward into their own communities.
“The University of Lethbridge has equipped you not only with knowledge, but with courage, empathy, and resilience,” Bernadine told the graduates. “Let your light shine with integrity, guidance, and hope.”
The Boulets’ words captured the spirit of the day — one of new beginnings, shared purpose, and the power of human connection. Their story continues to remind us that even through loss, there can be profound renewal and inspiration.
The Logan Boulet Effect
Since 2018, over 150,000 Canadians have registered as organ donors — inspired by Logan’s decision to give the gift of life. His legacy continues to grow each year through Green Shirt Day and the countless conversations it sparks.
Green Shirt Day proudly congratulates Dr. Bernadine and Dr. Toby Boulet on this well-deserved recognition and thanks them for their ongoing dedication to spreading awareness about the life-saving importance of organ and tissue donation.
