Spark the Conversation: Seventh Annual Green Shirt Day Commemorating the Legacy of Logan Boulet and the Humboldt Broncos

April 3, 2025 (LETHBRIDGE, AB) — Green Shirt Day 2025 is all about the power of stories. And it all started with one — the story of Logan Boulet. It has now been seven years since Logan’s decision to become an organ donor saved six lives and inspired a movement. The Logan Boulet Effect has encouraged hundreds of thousands of Canadians to register as organ donors, proving how one choice can make a world of difference.

This act of generosity followed a devastating loss. On April 6, 2018, a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior ice hockey team was involved in a collision, resulting in the tragic loss of 16 lives, including defenceman Logan Boulet, and injuring 13 others.

“We are often told how the story of Logan’s desire to be a donor and our family being able to carry out that wish, has impacted and inspired others to have conversations about organ donation and to register as donors,” Bernadine Boulet says. “These conversations have helped families in times of tragedy and loss in making some of the most difficult decisions. Logan has made those conversations a little easier to have.”

We honour those we have lost and carry that spirit of generosity forward every time we wear our Green Shirt Day shirts. Our shirts spark conversations — about Logan’s legacy, about organ donation, and about the simple but powerful act of registering. When we share our stories, we inspire others to do the same.

“The conversation around Green Shirt Day has steadily grown across Canada and as a family, we are incredibly proud of that, however we are more proud of our son Logan and the decision he made to have a conversation with me and then tell others that he wanted to be an organ donor,” Toby Boulet says.

The seventh annual Green Shirt Day is on Monday, April 7. The campaign is led by the Boulet family and the Canadian Transplant Association in partnership with many others within Canada’s organ and tissue donation community such as Canadian Blood Services and The Kidney Foundation of Canada. The promoters would also like to acknowledge the generous support of IA Financial Group.

This year let’s continue Logan’s legacy. Wear your green shirt, talk about why organ donation matters, and encourage others to register. One conversation can save lives.

“I love this theme of sparking conversations,” Dr. Graham Sher, CEO of Canadian Blood Services, says. “It really is these small moments between friends, loved ones and even strangers that make the difference. If Canadians unite in speaking about the importance of organ donation, we can ensure that the legacy left behind by Logan Boulet carries on. That means more patients whose lives will be saved.”

The Seventh Anniversary Green Shirt Day Design

A national competition to select the 2025 Green Shirt Day design ended with the dynamic image of Logan taking a slap shot being chosen. The design was created by artist Geoffrey Kehrig, a registered organ and tissue donor who grew up in Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

“After the bus crash, I purchased a Logan Boulet Humboldt Broncos jersey and I’ve proudly worn it while playing pick-up street hockey in my B.C. community,” Kehrig shares. “I’m inspired by Logan’s unselfish choices and his reverence and compassion for others.”

National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week: April 20-26, 2025

On the heels of Green Shirt Day is National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week (NOTDAW) and a great opportunity to keep the conversation going. During this week we recognize those who have donated to save others and celebrate those who have received lifesaving transplants.

There are more than 4,000 Canadians waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant and every year approximately 250 people die waiting for an organ transplant. One organ donor can save up to eight lives and tissues can save or improve up to 75 lives.

Sadly, many donation opportunities are missed each year because families don’t know whether their loved one wanted to be an organ donor. Make it easy for them. Talk about it today.
